Twenty-five centuries of philosophical ideas in one extensive series. Everything that you need to know, with all the great names, all the great works and all the pioneering ideas. What is man? From Socrates to Peter Sloterdijk, for 2,500 years, philosophy has produced questions and answers that are the basis of every ideology and philosophy. The results of critical thinking in the fields of ethics, epistemology, anthropology, logic and political theory are the pearls of western culture. They are the ideas that have shaped us and our culture into what we are today. From Plato’s Cave to Montesquieu’s Trias Politica. From Descartes “I think therefore I am” to Wittgenstein’s “What we cannot speak about, we must pass over in silence”.

The Philosophy box set comprises of 3,240 pages in five parts and contains original texts from the greatest eastern and western philosophers from the past until the present day. Each part of the box set has a reference and an introduction by Daan Roovers, the editor-in-chief of the Dutch Filosofie Magazine. The five specially written letters by contemporary philosophers are unique. These letters are written by Bas Belleman to Niccolò Machiavelli, René Gude to René Descartes, Maarten Doorman to Immanuel Kant, Bert Keizer to Ludwig Wittgenstein and Paul Cliteur to Richard Rorty.

The key to the success of Brilliant Books and Brilliant Classics lies in the combination of high quality for a very reasonable price with surprising extras. With the box set, the reader also receives a free special edition of Filosofie Magazine that contains an overview of the history of philosophy.

Rothschild & Bach, the new publishing house of Foreign Media Group, will kick off this fall

The new publishing house of Foreign Media Group, led by Oscar van Gelderen, will start this fall as publishing house Rothschild & Bach.

The name of the publishing house is a tribute to the legendary publisher Jan Ritsema, the man who discovered Arnon Grunberg. Between 1990 and 1993 Jan Ritsema published fifteen books under the same publishing name: besides the debut of Grunberg, he also published two titles of Bindervoet & Henkes, and work from Battus, Rüdiger Safranski, and Peter Handke. Rothschild & Bach would like to combine money with art: the name Rothschild & Bach is classy, humorous, international, and effective.

This fall, Rothschild & Bach will publish new books of Khalid Boudou, Thé Lau, Rachid, Simon de Waal, Renske de Greef, Ali B, and Sean Wilsey. Of the latter author, Rothschild & Bach will present the title Oh, The Glory of It All; as heartbreaking and staggering as the debut of Dave Eggers. For the publishing team of Rothschild & Bach, this evokes the right emotions of this new publishing house.

Two imprints fall under Rothschild & Bach, controlled by two co-publishers:

  • In cooperation with Frank Bierens, Rothschild & Bach will continue with the successful Spunk, a website/ breeding ground for young talent between sixteen and twenty-two. The design of the titles will be less fixed and more diversified then before; every year between six and eight titles will be published. Now famous Spunk-authors are Renske de Greef, Hannah Buenting, Raoul de Jong and, as of this fall, Ali B.
  • Louis Behre is the brains behind the Crossing Border Festival, the largest spoken-word festival in Europe. After ten years of successful cooperation, Oscar van Gelderen and Louis Behre will join forces and will proceed in a more structural way: Rothschild & Bach will organise theatre tours with writers, musicians, and artists. Each year they will publish three books under the name Crossing Border Books: special (cooperation) projects in book form of authors and/or musicians who perform during Crossing Border.

Besides publisher Oscar van Gelderen, the team of Rothschild & Bach will be made up of Katrien Gottlieb (editor Dutch literature), Diana Gvozden (editor translated literature, thrillers, and Spunk), and Joni Zwart (acquisition and PR).

Rothschild & Bach is part of the book trade of Foreign Media Group, which also includes Uitgeverij 521, Pimento, Company of Books, and Foreign Media Magazines.

Foreign Media Group is an internationally operating publishing group in different fields of the media. With twelve publishing houses, each with its own expertise, Foreign Media Group has a unique position on the market. Reading, watching, and listening, in all possible genres, from classical to contemporary and aimed at both children and adults - Foreign Media Group targets a wide range of media products. The publications of Foreign Media Group consist of music-CDs, books, audio books, magazines, movies, DVDs, documentaries, games, and CD-ROMs. The publishing vision anticipates the different media products and possible combinations. Foreign Media Group succesful in cross-media filming of Carry Slee's book (in theatres in October)

Foreign Media Group will present the cross-media film production Afblijven this fall. Afblijven is based on the award-winning book of the same name by Carry Slee. It is a film about today’s world. The connecting threads in Afblijven are friendship, hip-hop and street dance. Afblijven is the first cross-media film for youth that includes a combination of film, books, ringtones, dvd, streaming internet footage, mobile game, audio CDs, downloads and weblogs.

Cross-media approach works!

Due to the cross-media approach, the target group (8-15 year-olds) is in constant contact with the products of Afblijven. This effect is heightened by the many well-known names involved with the film: Carry Slee (author), Brainpower (author and singer), Jim Bakkum (actor), Maria Peters (scenario and director), Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen (actor) and Roberto da Casto (dance instructor, 3 times world champion hip-hop).

Already, three months before the release of the film, this approach is proving to be enormously successful. In cooperation with Bruna, the action Get Casted was set up at www.schoolparty.nl. Over 400 young people placed a dance audition on Bruna's website. These video clips were viewed two million times and more than 700,000 votes were entered.

Victoria Farkas, editor of Kidsweek, follows lead actress Melissa and writes the book Hoe word ik een filmster. There is a weblog where actors and film producer Dave Schram write about their experiences on the set. The first music and mobile game will be out soon.

In October, the film will be in theatres. This means that there are still lots of promotion opportunities for promotion partners.

Summary Afblijven

Melissa loves dance and takes classical ballet. At least, that is what her parents think. But when she arrives at the dance school, she really takes hip-hop lessons. Jordi is in the same class as Melissa. He has known her since elementary school and has a crush on her. When Melissa gets to dance in the video clip of a super well-known rapper, Jordi is totally excited for her. But, in order to hide her lack of self-confidence, she begins to secretly take pills. She keeps upping the dosage. Her friends feel powerless. How can they help Melissa?

Carry Slee

Children’s book author Carry Slee has written over seventy successful books since 1989. Four million copies of her books have been sold. Carry Slee’s books have won many awards, including the Prijs van de Nederlandse Kinderjury nine times, the Prijs van de Nederlandse Jonge Jury four times, the Venz kinderboekenprijs and the Pluim van de Maand twice. Carry Slee uses the kind of clear language that appeals to youth. Afblijven is the first award-winning best-seller by Carry Slee that is being made into a movie.

Maria Peters

The scenario and directing are in the hands of Maria Peters (De Tasjesdief, Kruimeltje and Pietje Bell). ‘I’m very excited about making this book into a film, because of the familiarity, the dance and music as well as the romance. It will be a movie about today's world,' says Maria Peters.

The film is being produced by Shooting Star Filmcompany, the film production company that belongs to Dave Schram, Hans Pos and Maria Peters. Shooting Star has procuded De Tasjesdief and Left Luggage and has also produced films like Kruimeltje and Pietje Bell 1 & 2, which together attracted an audience of nearly 3 million.

Foreign Media Group launches a new imprint for women

On the 1st of April 2006, a new imprint will start within the book division of Foreign Media Group :   Truth & Dare.

Truth & Dare is aimed at the female reading public. Publisher Martine Koelemeijer and acquiring

editor Eva Reinders have a contemporary publisher’s list in view with honest, gutsy books. Truth

because the naked truth and prevailing taboos are not avoided and Dare because the publishing

strategy is distinguished by daring. The list will accommodate fiction & non-fiction, Dutch &

translated, and black & white & four colour printing.

The target-group of Truth & Dare is the modern, self-assured, independent woman in all stages of

her life. She will find honest books for every important life event at Truth & Dare. In addition Truth

& Dare will spot all the new trends for her. Finally, Truth and Dare’s fiction will give her the recognition and relaxation she needs in the form of novels that fit her experiences seamlessly.

The publishers are like the target group; always curious about the latest trends and on the look-out

for the absolute truth. Being daring and gutsy they want to publish those books that stir up

discussions, publish cross medially and start joint ventures with other media.

Truth & Dare’s first offer will be published this autumn and will give a good picture of the full

breadth of the list. Truth & Dare acquired the rights of the mom-lit titles by Risa Green via a fast

2-book deal at the London Bookfair. During an exciting auction just after the fair, they succeeded in

landing the rights to ‘The adultery club’, a sensational novel about adultery which awakens the

voyeur in every woman. Together with Cecelia Ahern, these titles guarantee a promising fiction

section. The authors Anna van Wittenberghe, Constance de Koning, Charlotte De Backer, and Lenny

Duijvelaar will, in addition, ensure high-profile non-fiction.

Truth & Dare is ready for action and challenges all inquisitive gutsy women to buy its books & to

sell them & to write them.

Truth & Dare is part of the book division of Foreign Media group to which Uitgeverij 521, Pimento,

HvR (Heleen van Royen), Rothschild & Bach, Carry Slee, TM Publishers, Company of Books and

Foreign Media Magazines belong.

Martine Koelemeijer will begin a new imprint at Foreign Media Group

On the first of March 2006, Martine Koelemeijer will join Foreign Media Books, the book division of Foreign Media Group. Koelemeijer has been appointed publisher and will start a new imprint.

The imprint will concentrate on fiction and non-fiction for a female reading public. There will be books by Dutch as well as by translated authors. The basic principle of the publisher’s list is information, inspiration, and relaxation for the woman of today. Fiction (trendy fiction, novels) and non-fiction (among others; popular psychology, motherhood, life style and life stories) will find their place.

The publisher’s list distinguishes itself by a cross medial approach and will work closely together with periodicals, television companies and other partners.

The imprint is in keeping with Foreign Media Books' strategy of bringing a limited number of titles to the notice of a wide audience and offering authors and their titles optimum support in marketing and publicity. A maximum of 25 titles a year will be published under the imprint.

As publisher, Koelemeijer will receive support from an acquiring editor. There will be a vacancy for this position in the immediate future.

Martine Koelemeijer is working as a publisher for Unieboek at the moment, where she is responsible for the MOM imprint. This publishing list was set up under her supervision and has, during the past years, played an important role in the market for family & health non-fiction. Important MOM titles are; The South Beach Diet, Supernanny and Het negen maanden dagboek (The nine months diary). Koelemeijer formerly worked for publisher Prometheus/Bert Bakker.

With the arrival of Koelemeijer, Foreign Media Books will concentrate even more on the female reading public. Next to this new imprint, Foreign Media will also be targeting the specific literary, upmarket female reading public. More information will be given shortly on the interpretation of this publishing list, which, in literary non-fiction, will work closely together with the documentary label of FMG.

Uitgeverij 521, Pimento, Pimento children’s books, Rothschild & Bach, Trademark, Company of Books and Foreign Media Magazines are part of Foreign Media Group’s book division.

The new novel by Heleen van Royen: De ontsnapping

It is frightful, delightful, crazy, hilarious, it is wonderful… it is the new novel by Heleen van Royen. On Thursday 16th February, the book division of Foreign Media Group will publish the third novel by the successful and much talked-about author. De ontsnapping is the tragicomic account of a woman who tries to escape from the life she finds herself in. “My family is far, far away and I’m all alone.”

De ontsnapping is the third novel by Heleen van Royen and follows her overwhelming debut De gelukkige huisvrouw and the equally successful follow-up Godin van de jacht. Her first book sold more than 175,000 copies. Her second book was best sold Dutch language novel of 2003 and sold more than 200,000 copies. The books were published in twelve countries. De gelukkige huisvrouw is currently being filmed by director Paula van der Oest, who received an Oscar nomination for Zus & Zo.

Although De ontsnapping has not yet been published, the publisher Krüger Verlag has already purchased the German translation rights. The publisher Susanne Halbleib, who previously successfully published Godin van de jacht, describes Heleen van Royen as a sharp, witty writer who has her ear close to the ground. She sees great opportunities for Van Royen in the German market.

Besides her novels, Heleen van Royen, who has worked as an editor and reported for various newspapers and magazines, also wrote a series of much talked-about columns for Het Parool and Planet Internet. A selection of her columns has been published in Je zal er maar mee getrouwd zijn.

The main character in Van Royen’s new novel is a woman who sees the daily grind of family life as very oppressive. My name is Julia. I have two children and I’m still awake. I’m sitting up straight and look sideways. Paul’s mouth is slightly open and there are beads of sweat on his forehead. I make a fist with my right hand. He doesn’t know how many nights I have lain awake. I could wake him from his dream with one well-aimed punch. It's tempting. I whisper to him, “I would love to punch you in the face”.

Julia wants to leave. She does not want to be a good mother, a good wife nor a good daughter for a while. For the first time in her life, she does something totally irresponsible, she leaves her husband and children and heads for the sun. The spirit of Jimmy, her dead brother, travels with her, and reminds his sister of old promises she once made. After a difficult start, she enjoys her new-found freedom. Julia experiences some wild adventures with two small Germans, undergoes a series of plastic surgery operations and finds herself in the arms of Romeo, an American "entrepreneur" who holds a mirror up to her face in his own particular way. He asks Julia the sixty-four thousand dollar question, does she dare go back home?

De ontsnapping is the first novel by Heleen van Royen from her new publisher Foreign Media Group (www.foreignmediagroup.com). FMG is a publishing group which is active in various media and which operates internationally. The book division offers its authors a publishing house where they have maximum control over their work. The multimedia publisher offers its authors and illustrators the possibility to publish their work, or any work resulting from it, in various media platforms, from audio CD to DVD and CD-ROM. FMG publishes books for all types of readers, from picture books for young children to children’s literature and from colourful literature to much talked-about biographies.
